TOLEDO, OH (THE BLADE) - Whitmer running back Jody Webb shouldered plenty of the offense for the Division I state semifinalist Panthers this fall.
The elusive back rushed for 1,539 yards on 223 totes, including 30 for touchdowns to help the Panthers post a 13-1 overall record.
Webb was named the 2011 Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association Hilton Murphy player of the year scholarship award recipient during the Newsboys' annual banquet held on Monday.
Maumee quarterback Jake Schneider, Central Catholic running back Amir Edwards, and Webb were announced as the three finalists for the annual award.
The winner is determined in part by weekly voting by local media representatives during the high school football regular season.
Also, the Newsboys awarded St. Ursula's Cassidy Croci with the volleyball award. Croci and teammate Matti Strall were the finalists for the volleyball award.
Furthermore, others receiving scholarships from the Newsboys included Owens Community College's Brittany Martin, Northview's Dalton Sturt, Woodward's Paris Jenkins and Crishanna Jones, Rogers' Amber Giovannucci, Bowsher's Ashley Parks, Whitmer's Sofia Ysasi, Central's George Pendleton and Waite's Ruben Hernandez.
The Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association has been around for more than 75 years serving northwest Ohio in various charitable endeavors. The Newsboys, who are committed to helping children, has more than 600 active and life members.
